Gathering space

This landscape underwent a full renovation focused on creating a beautiful, functional space for the entire family.  By leveling and reshaping a previously inaccessible area, we transformed it into a welcoming gathering space that has quickly become a favorite destination.  Additional highlights include a hammock retreat beneath mature trees, vibrant seasonal plantings and bluestone paths and steps that connect areas of the garden.

A beautiful property with a mix of modern and natural styles with a combination of structure and looseness in the plantings.

Contemporary Play, Chevy Chase

This backyard project was a fun challenge to bring calmness into a yard with disparate elements such as: a prominent shed, long waiving stone retaining wall, angled Ipe deck, and aging board-on-board fence.  By changing the fence to a cedar horizontal one, the entire yard started to fall into place.  By adding new exuberant planting beds with trees to anchor the shed and soft plantings to show-off the beautiful stone wall, the backyard turned into the serene oasis the homeowner had wanted.

New Backyard Landscape

A refuge on the coast of Maine.  A playful zigzag cedar walkway leads to the outdoor sauna and shower; irregular local bluestone path to the deck; and. a wood chip path to the water.    All paths are surrounded by native plants.

Arts & Crafts Garden, Bethesda

The shingle style home needed an inviting approach which was in scale to the house.  Adding a curved irregular flagstone from the driveway and a secondary narrow walkway along the house provided the curb appeal and the proper paths for good circulation.  A soft planting of ornamental grasses and exuberant perennials makes for year-round interest in the garden.
An Ipe deck with cable railings was added to the back of the house with a great view of the back garden. 

Asian Garden, Kensington

Making the most out of a narrow garden.  This is an example of bringing the outside in, as this mid-Century modern house is all glass on the side looking into the garden.  An Asian inspired garden gives the homeowner the serenity they wanted.   A river rock 'river' snakes its way through the entire garden, while a natural looking path and bridge go right through the center.  Plantings of Japanese forest grass and other shade tolerant plantings provide a mix of textures and color.

Strong structural plantings anchor the small DC front garden, complimented by natives plants that introduce contrast, color and year-round seasonal interest. The front walkway is made from thermal blue stone steppers set in stone dust,  which leads to a curved side path.

Into the Woods,  Potomac

Re-using and re-purposing material on site was the strategy in creating this backyard woodlands garden.  Firewood was stacked to create a long, waving wall; an intimate seating area was created with a log used as a footstool; old pavers were turned upside down and immediately took on a cool, fresh look.  
Existing tree roots, shade and deer created challenges.  We put our emphasis on combining plant textures along with adding a few Japanese maples and native Redbuds for just the right amount of color and interest.

Country Farmhouse Garden

Bucolic country home works as a weekend retreat away from a hectic urban life.  A secret garden tucked behind a stone-stacked wall is a place to relax when not tending to the bountiful veggie garden.  


Beth El on Old Georgetown Rd, Bethesda

Designing a garden which is viewed by 1000 people per day at 45 mph was a unique challenge.  The block long synagogue had a stark appearance which needed to be softened.  This was accomplished by adding warm colored curved retaining walls, plants that move in the wind, and a natural arrangement of trees, shrubs and perennials, with an emphasis on native plants.

Springtime in the Washington, DC area provide flowering trees and bulbs!  People are pulled into this garden.  The two chairs are a natural draw.
